The term wainscot originally applied to the inner covering of a wall or walls with high quality oak or wooden boards. 
We know that this term has changed a lot, as do home trends and terminology do in general. 
Now, the term wainscot typically applies to a 3 to 4 foot high covering or lining on an interior or an exterior of a home or building. And it no longer only applies to wood boards, but to all sorts of products including stone, brick, etc.
