What is a German Schmear ? A German Schmear is a mortar wash technique that has been used for centuries. In order to achieve this ancient technique, mortar is smeared across the face of the brick. The smearing of mortar creates a rustic timeless feel.
Similar to a German Schmear is limewash. A limewash is a combination of crushed limestone and water. When applied it gives a similar aesthetic, however, unlike paint or limewash a German Schmear covers the material with out penetrating the brick. In other words, a German Schmear is perfect technique if you are looking to add color, texture, and interest to your home!
