Now that we have talked a little bit about pattern in our last post, lets talk texture.

Texture by definition is the visual and especially tactile quality of a surface. Texture refers to the characteristic of anything we feel or touch as well as see. The texture of all surfaces and finishes in a space should be chosen carefully to create dimension and character strategically.

Imagine this space above without the fur throw. Not as interesting is it? It’s because of the texture!

In this photo below we can see the before and after effects of what adding a stone fireplace and all of the texture involved with that can do to a space.

Many times when we think of texture we limit our selves, thinking only of fabrics and textiles, but stone and brick products add texture and can dramatically elevate a specific style and mood of a space. Texture can tell you whether the room is urbane and sophisticated, or rustic and relaxed and more. Different types of stone and brick offer many textures to choose from, for instance: Rough, Weathered, Smooth and Flat, Smooth and Round, Chiseled, Chopped, Rugged, and more.

You can pair similar textured with similar textures or pair one or two bold textured items in an otherwise predominantly smooth textured space. Be careful with pairing textures though. Too many different bolder textures can add busy-ness to a space, though just enough can add warmth, and too many smoother textures can make a space look clinical and bland but it can also feel cool, calm, and zen. Choose your textures with a purpose.

Utilizing texture can bring more emphasis to a focal point in a room or just add background interest. It’s up to you!
